To succeed, every organization has to do two things right
– formulate right strategies and implement them effectively.
This book is all about the latter: it thoroughly delves into
the new mantra of a CEO’s ‘Implementation of Strategy’.
It was interesting to read in the book that according to
leadership experts, about 70% of the CEOs fail, not because
their vision is flawed, but because they fail to implement
it effectively.
The book begins with the challenges that a company has to
face while implementing strategies and the results of the
exercise. The authors go on to list a series of strategies
that were ineffective as a result of poor implementation.
I am sure each one of us, at some time or the other, would
have faced some of the situations listed here.
According to the authors there are eight traps that an executive
has to be wary of while implementing the strategies. These
are: failing to launch the right initiatives, failing to bring
down the initiatives to a manageable number, failing to put
in place a right structure, failing to install a supportive
environment, failing to involve the right people for the right
jobs, failing to use a common language across departments
for the initiatives, failing to implement effective &
efficient monitoring and reporting systems and finally, failing
to be patient. The authors have dedicated a chapter to explain
how to avoid each of these traps.
The book in its final chapters takes an example of a strategy
initiative and details the steps at every stage of its implementation.
Definitely, this is a very useful book for all executives,
especially if your company constantly deals with strategic
projects.
